What is Chemotherapy?
Chemotherapy means treatment with anti-cancer drugs that kill or decrease the growth of rapidly growing cancer cells.
It is considered to be the mainstay of treatment for advanced stage disease that has spread to distant body parts. And may even be used in early stage disease before or after] surgery, or with radiation therapy.
When is chemotherapy needed for cancer treatment?
Broadly, chemotherapy may be given in any stage of the tumor, early and advanced.
In early stages, it may be of following types-
Neoadjuvant - When chemotherapy is given before surgery to shrink the tumor size
Adjuvant - When chemotherapy is given after surgery
Concurrent - When chemotherapy is given along with radiation therapy
Sequential - When chemotherapy is given before or after radiation therapy
In advanced stages, chemotherapy is usually given to relieve the symptoms and prolong the life and is called as Palliative chemotherapy.
